I have checked disk management and it says it is working properly, however it says it is RAW but nothing is showing black or unallocated. However, when I attach the 4TB disk, the light flashes and it makes the usual “ping” to say its connected, but nothing shows in My Folders.
When I went back to try again, I thought I would try with a different PC and it was not recognised, so I tried a 1TB passport that I also own and that showed fine, therefore the cable is fine and 1TB also showed on Dell PC. (Fixed using CMD prompt, chkdsk utility.) Computer detects errors, wants to run CheckDisk.
Have had a host of problems: Computer thinks drive needs to be formatted. I purchased a My Passport Metal Ultra 4-TB drive, and nothing but trouble. I have had VERY reliable function with my previous 1-TB and 2-TB drives (both My Passport style). I therefore closed down all the programs and shut down the computer thinking it needed a break. OK, I’m having some trouble with 4TB drives. I tried to “safely remove the disk” but nothing happened, although the white light on the drive was continually flashing.
I was happily cutting and pasting my videos when it suddenly couldn’t find the disk. Our data-centric solutions are comprised of the Western Digital, G-Technology, SanDisk, SanDisk Professional and WD brands. My Dell computer was showing as low on space so I decided to transfer all my precious videos from my harddrive to my new WD 4TB passport bought in May but only used once to backup. Your PC has some big issues if it took 8 hours to install a driver, or you are over-exaggerating to the point it’s nonsense. Smartware is installed and loaded into your computer, not the drive. Even if you don’t have a WD drive you can install it from their site, so if it took 3 hours your computer is as fast as a pregnant turtle. Since firmware updates are delicate and can kill electronic devices, those are only on the tech site -in case- they are needed The firmware is pre-installed to the drive at the moment it’s manufactured.

It took 8 hours to install the origional drivers it was supposed to come with. Mine came without any drivers or firmware on it so it’s taking 3 hours to transfer the 29mb smartware software onto the hdd. I’ve also tried it on my Linux box same issues. Anytime I navigate around inside the drive via Windows Explorer it’s very slow. I’ve already done a chkdsk /f on the drive and it took a really long time. My problem however is that now when I try to transfer all my files off of the My Passport drive back to my PC, it’s exteremely slow, it’s max transfer rate is 70K/b sec… I’m just wondering what this is caused by, maybe my hardware is just bad and I shouldn’t be complaining, but I have like 700GBs of data I need to pull off this drive, at this rate it will take weeks. After double clicking on the drive it took another minute or so to open up the drive and I saw that all my data was there. Miraculously the ticking was no longer present and the drive appeared in My Computer after about 4 minutes. I did everything I could, I through it in the freezer over night, still nothing… However, after leaving it alone for a few days, I decided to plug it into my Windows box again and see what happened. The drive was making the dreaded ticking of death sound. A few days ago this drive seemed to have crashed on me… I was really disappointed because this had a lot of my backed up pictures and videos of my kids. Hi, I have a My Passport 1TB external drive.
